The first step in determining how much weight you can carry in your box is to check the weight capacity for your vehicle. To do this click here click here. Select the make and model of your vehicle. Then, in the drop down box labeled "Fits", select year of the vehicle and the type of rack system you have or intend to have on top of the car. The weight limit for your vehicle and the selected rack system is shown in the "Fit Information" box just below.
To determine how much weight you can carry in the box you must subtract the weight of the box (listed below) from the maximum weight listed for the vehicle.
If you are using the factory crossbars;
Listed max weight for vehicle - Cargo box weight = Max that can be carried in the cargo box
If you are using a Yakima, or other aftermarket rack to attach the box;
In this case you must also subtract the weight of the rack from the maximum weight listed. For most rack systems 15 lbs is an average weight to use in your calculation.
Listed max weight for vehicle - (Rack system weight)+(cargo box weight) = Max that can be carried in the cargo box
